2009 Sunglass Trends for Women: The Year of the Bug-Eye? by Kate Whitely
2008 saw the return of Ray-Ban’s Wayfarer sunglasses (and many imitators) to the faces of the rich, famous, and fashion-obsessed. They have even shown up in films, such as late-season Oscar bait “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, where Cate Blanchett (and her leading man, Brad Pitt) sports a pair in several scenes. The John F. Kennedy-inspired look got a few updates, with bold frame colors and lenses that weren’t basic black. Judging by what the designers are offering for 2009, this year’s sunglasses will be a bit more Jackie Kennedy-large, round, oversized shades.
But wait, you say, haven’t great big round glasses been showing up on female celebrities for a few years now? Yes, they have, but most of those early adopters were “celebutantes” like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie, or models such as Kate Moss (who loves her Prada butterfly-wing sunglasses. Now the round, oversized frame has gone mainstream, showing up on a wider range of celebrities-from bona-fide Oscar winner Halle Berry to teenage witch Emma Watson, and even on the faces of public figures who aren’t associated with Hollywood: future First Lady Michelle Obama, for example, has been seen in oversized frames.
So what are the advantages of the first big look of 2009? Well, for starters, if you’ve already caught on to this trend, you don’t need to buy a new pair of sunglasses, which is pretty helpful in a struggling economy. If you haven’t got a pair of oversized frames yet, don’t worry. There are plenty of styles out there that will suit most faces and not make you look like an alien or someone’s swingin’ bingo grandma. Just make sure you pick a pair that doesn’t poke out very far on either side of your face, or you’ll look like a five-year-old who’s stolen your mother’s Guccis.
For women with oval-shaped or round faces, either round or rounded-off square lenses will suit. If you want the classic round Jackie-O style frames, try Tom Ford’s Alessandra TF94 or Anna TF64. The bold shape of both these frame styles manages to stay feminine with arm details and chunky curves. You can go with the basic black frame options or a flashier tortoiseshell look for both.
Women with heart-shaped faces (a broad forehead that tapers to a pointy chin) should try on styles with square lenses, like the Bulgari 8009B or Prada’s SPR18I. The former pair offer plenty of face coverage without making the top of the face look much broader, and Kate Moss, whose face is about as heart-shaped as they come, practically lives in the latter pair. They look great on her.
If your face is more squared-off, you are probably not going to enjoy the round, bug-eyed look. You can take a hint from singer Rhianna, however, and opt for a larger version of an aviator- or wayfarer-shaped frame. Rhianna has a squared-off jawline, and she set it off well recently in a pair of Guccis similar to the Gucci 2747. The fluid lines and gradient lens on these glasses avoid breaking the wearer’s face up into geometric shapes the way a pair of oversized round ones would, which softens the effect of an angular jaw.
Finally, remember that the oversized sunglasses trend has its practical as well as frivolous side: those big lenses block more sunlight from your eyes and the area around your eyes. This not only prevents damage to your sight, but also premature wrinkling from sun exposure. And huge lenses also hide any evidence that you haven’t slept-good news for party animals, workaholics, and yummy mummies alike.
