Making A Costume

Roman soldiers created and maintained the magnificent Roman Empire  for an incredible length of time.   This soldier was responsible for keeping Rome out of harms way while spreading Roman ideals to many foreign lands.   Each warrior was equipped with a solid sword, shield, and set of armor to go into battle with.  This article will teach you how to make your own Roman soldier costume to get a better idea of what it was like to go into battle as a Roman soldier.

The first thing you need to do is to create some authentic looking armor.   The Roman soldier armor you make must be an obvious replica so that all your friends and family members will immediately recognize it.   You’ll need to find yourself some red cloth to make a tunic out of and some thong sandals in nondescript sand like color.  Then you’ll want to find a metal material to make chain mail out of.  You will do this by meshing the metal objects together to form an entire shirt of metal.   Finish off the look by finding yourself a Roman helmet and your clothing will be complete.

Following this you will have to decide on a weapon to accompany your armor.   Roman soldiers typically fought with short stabbing swords, javelins, or tridents.  You can buy a javelin at the store or create one from a stick or metal pole.   Place to boards together in cross like fashion using 1 long board and 1 short board and you have an instant sword.

You’ll find that the shields used were round and not quite as large as the usual medieval type shields of the legendary knights.   This was because Roman soldiers marched long distances on foot and did not want to be encumbered with heavy gear.   You can create this type of shield with the lid of a trash can and some gold paint.   Paint the shield gold and affix a handle on the inside so that you can hold the shield at the ready position.

Now that you have your roman armor, your shield, and your sword you can accuretley portray one of the fiercest warriors of all time.  Use your costume for parties, theatrical plays, or as a display in your house.  Be careful to keep your newly made or acquired weapon away from children and others that may accidentally be harmed by it.
